Barkada ni Pedro
Volunteers of the Commission on Youth of the Archdiocese of Cebu are using Facebook to start an online prayer community.
“Barkada ni Pedro” (BNP) provides a meeting place where people who need someone to pray for them can meet people who want to pray for the intentions of others.
"For me this is a realization of what Pope Benedict XVI said that modern technology should be a way of bonding people and of reaching out and direct people in the midst of so much growth in science,” said BNP organizer Marlito Cabigas.
“God can still be the center of our life and God could still be in all of this seemingly worldly endeavor."
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma joined the BNP and became a prayer ka-barkada when BNP organizers visited Palma at his residence a few months ago.
They gave the archbishop a BNP T-shirt, which Palma wore right away and posed for pictures with the group.
The Facebook page ofBarkada ni Pedro was launched last August 6 in time for preparations for the Oct. 21 canonization of the country’s second saint Pedro Calungsod.
To join this online community, go to www.facebook.com/barkadanipedro and click “like”.
You can go there to pray and to be prayed for.
One can post a prayer intention in the field 'Write Something…' which is transformed into a 'pray box.’ For example “PRAY BOX: My mama is not feeling well, please pray for her.” If you want to commit to pray for the person’s intention, click the 'like' button of the posted intention.
The prayer intentions posted here will be offered during the 6 p.m. Mass every Friday at the Archdiocesan Youth Center on P. Gomez Street beside the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
“If Pedro Calungsod were alive today, he could have been a Facebook user too,” said one of the volunteers.
On November 30, almost one million devotees will gather at the South Road Properties in Cebu City for a National Thanksgiving Mass presided by Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
